Still under renovation

Trapo!!!

So the carnival is really in town....

I never gave election periods any serious thought before. To me, it’s just a bunch of monkeys clamouring for a bigger slice of the constantly shrinking pie. It’s a dog eat dog world after all, and there are those willing to do anything just to get that larger slice, covert and devious acts of fraudulence. Or so I thought.

I just got home this weekend when I discovered a nasty irritating surprise. Sitting on my desk was a white envelope with the official seal of the Senate and a stamp that says Official Mail. I immediately reflected on the last things I did, and asked my self if any of those included money laundering, extrajudicial murder, plunder, mingling with the wrong side of some politician, or anything that would result in a notice ordering me to present myself before the Senate. The answer was no, so I thought, it must be good news then, like a scholarship or something.

But much to my surprise, it was neither. It as a vague, equivocal, self-congratulatory propaganda letter from Senator Edgardo Angara. The letter was dated Jan 1, 2007, a date, that if my memory serves me right, is ages away from the official campaign period. Then I thought, how the f*ck did this guy get my address, let alone my name, and why didn’t anyone else in the house get this friggin letter?

But it’s not just the timing of this letter, but also how it was sent. It was sent as an official mail from the senate, meaning it was exempt from postage stamps. Sure stamps are only worth at the very least 25 cents each, 7 pesos tops, but imagine that blasted bastard mailing one to every household. I don’t know the official count for the number of households in our country, but I’m sure it’s way above 10 million. So, our pretty little senator has just saved himself over 10 million pesos in campaign expenses.

I thought these politicians use the government’s funds for their personal gain secretly, not darn outright like this. I guess I was wrong.

But I guess it’s been this way a long time ago. So what else has changed in our clown-ridden country?
